The Profession of Real Estate
NEW AGENTS

If you want to go part time or simply augment your income, you can do that as a real estate agent, but it is unlikely you will make major money. The truth is that in real estate, like any profession, you will get out of it whatever you put into it. You can make good money in the real estate trade, but it is hard work. What we will promise is that the more you work and the smarter you work, the more you will make.

EVEN THOUGH WE OFTEN REFER TO "SALES" YOU ARE NOT A SALESPERSON!

Real estate is a knowledge and contact driven business. You can generate business by walking up to every person you see on the street and asking "Do you want to buy or sell a home today?" and you will get both surprised looks and some limited business from doing so. Ditto picking up the phone book and calling everyone in it. Make enough calls and you can make a living. But, that is not the best or even smartest way to generate business.

PSR will teach you how to unobtrusively reach the people closest to you without being a pest. We will show you how your church,  temple, synagogue, soccer and little league teams are all prime resources for business. But we will also point out that business cannot be your focus in these surroundings. You need to give to get back. To be a successful agent you will have to spend time helping the non-profit you love and the community at large.

PSR will not encourage you to "SELL" in any of these venues, but will teach you how to farm them. You will have to cast your bread upon the waters to be a winner. You will have to provide people something they need, rather than looking for them to provide you with business. We will also show you how to keep in touch with everyone so that they remember and love you. Your Mom will thank us.

COMMISSION SELLING

Money is not going to fall from the trees. Many agents went full time in the early to mid 2000's, making easy money from low hanging fruit, only to find in the late 2000's that they had to really work to make a living. There are techniques for lead generation and even some tricks in advertising to generate leads, but it is a lead generation business. If you are not generating leads you are not going to make much money.

WHICH COMPANY SHOULD I WORK FOR AFTER I GET MY LICENSE?

Agents cannot work for themselves. They must be employed by a Real Estate Broker (Brokerage) and that is registered with the DRE. Who should you work for?

PSR, of course.

That's not fair. There are many very good companies, large and small, you can choose. Please, make sure you understand what you will be paying and what they are offering. Traditional companies like Tarbell, Prudential and Century 21 offer very good training, and some hand holding, but keep a larger portion of your commission (split) for the additional attention. There are many non-traditional companies that will charge very low fees, but will give you no training, as they are generally designed for experienced agents.

If you don't want to see the PSR pitch, skip the next two paragraphs.

PSR generally keeps less of your money but still understands the necessity for training. Take the time to look through this website, then compare it to other company websites. You will see that we provide a great deal more information than most companies. That should give you a sense for how PSR operates. As instructional agent Joe Ramos always says, "Knowledge is Power."

FULL TIME OR PART TIME?

PART-TIME

You can make some pretty good money to augment your retirement or put aside some money for the kid's education by working part time or referring business to other agents. There was an agent in Irvine, CA who made over $100,000 a year referring business to other agents. She never sold a home but had a business that put her in touch with people with means. She knew little about the business, but knew enough to get her license. She referred everything out to good full time agents she knew, kept doing her day job, and put away quite a nest egg.

You could do that too. Or, if you prefer to be a real estate hobbyist, you can capture the occasional deal from friends and relatives and work them yourself. Understand that real estate is very paper (or in PSR's case electronic) and process intensive. People with real full time day jobs will have a tough time making it through escrow without help. A transaction coordinator, who can work while the part time agent cannot, is a good idea.

FULL-TIME

If you want to do real estate full time ask yourself the following questions:

Am I a self-starter?

Do I get up raring to go with my juices flowing, or does someone have to kick me out of bed?
Unfortunately real estate is not a corporate job where you can show up, put in your hours and wait for a paycheck. You have to produce to get paid.

Can I figure things out for myself?

There is no Real Estate U and only a few of the experts in the industry studied to be REALTORS®. Can you look up stuff online and understand? Can you read and get it? Do you have common sense?

If the answer to any of these is NO, you need to team up with someone who does. There are no easy answers in real estate and every deal will be different from every other deal. Relying on a manager or broker will frustrate both you and them. If it is a matter of risk and you cannot find the answer on an official website, by all means ask, but if you have to ask about everything before looking for yourself, you need to partner up.
